Acid reflux in Babies: Do you have to worry about it?

Do you know that not only adults are suffering from acid reflux; there are also many cases of acid reflux in babies. Would you believe that approximately 10 million babies born each year, up to 45% of them might have difficulties of reflux in the first few months of their life? Most babies who have acid reflux are healthy. Sometimes, parents misunderstood acid reflux from common irritations. It is not always easy to determine the symptoms whether they are suffering from acid reflux because babies do not speak and can’t express their feelings at all.

Acid reflux in babies causes discomfort. Know more about it.

Acid reflux in babies is also known as “spitting up”. It gives discomfort to infants but in most cases, there is nothing to worry. This digestive problem in babies is common to most babies and doesn’t require any treatment although some severe cases of acid reflux in infants requires treatments. Doctors advised parents to have some laboratory tests to babies when they think that the baby is suffering severe acid reflux. For most infants, doctors just advised the parents to have a lifestyle change for the babies like for instance: their food intake and a healthy environment. Acid reflux can be a serious problem when it is improperly treated. Parents should know when to take actions and give treatments to their babies. Acid reflux in adults is very different from acid reflux in babies. Here are some of the symptoms you need to know:

1. Baby often cries without any reason and uneasy.
2. Baby frequently spits up or vomits and often has hiccups.
3. Baby often has a cough, sore throat and sometimes has bad breath.
4. Baby has problems with sleeping, restless and often wakes up.
5. Baby gets easily irritated especially when feeding and refuses to eat.
6. Baby is excessively losing weight and has difficulty in gaining weight.
7. Baby has problems with respiratory system like asthma. However, this is only in few cases where you can coordinate acid reflux with respiratory problems.

The symptoms of acid reflux in babies usually disappear as they are growing up. If your baby is growing up healthy and happy you don’t need to give them treatments at all. However, if the symptoms still exist until their first year, you might need to see a doctor and ask advice for the right treatment. Never give and buy over the counter medicines like antacids without examining your baby’s acid reflux case. They might harm your baby’s health. Your doctor will tell you the right procedures to find out if your baby needs treatments. Give proper care to your babies and give them a comfortable life they deserve.
